It’s ironic how you often only hear what you want to hear. Other times you hear everything that wasn’t said.

You can walk away from a meeting offended or leave your email inbox shaking your head wondering why people are such jerks and idiots.

In hindsight, it was probably just you having a rough day already.

Now, more than ever, it’s easy to get your feelings hurt by the little exchanges that happen all around you. Sometimes a quick conversation with a prospect or a check-in with your boss can end up with you feeling awkward and confused on the inside.

You’re not really sure why you feel upset — but it feels like what was not said is more important than what actually was said. And you feel confused and angry, frustrated and annoyed.

That mental turmoil will cost you.

It will can cost you positivity, focus, efficiency, time, money  – and certainly happiness. Instead of focusing on what really matters for your day, you are left wondering why something wasn’t said. Why some person is out to get you.

Sometimes what is it said is an ominous indicator of bad things to come in the future. It is a nice way of warning you that change is about to happen. That you’re in trouble.

Most of the time, what isn’t said isn’t said for a perfectly good reason.

Someone gets busy or distracted — life gets in the way. Usually, that’s why things happen the way they do. Not because of some evil master plan — simply because of other priorities, appointments, or things that arise in the moment.

Don’t believe everything you don’t hear.
