I’m here to share another Doceri presentation. This time I want to acquaint you with an AIMS fraction activity for fifth grade. Using the innovative whiteboard app by Doceri, classroom teachers can easily engage and involve students in this lesson.

The number one area of focus in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in fifth grade is fractions. The CCSS states that:
(1) Students apply their understanding of fractions and fraction models to
represent the addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators
as equivalent calculations with like denominators. They develop fluency
in calculating sums and differences of fractions, and make reasonable
estimates of them. Students also use the meaning of fractions, of
multiplication and division, and the relationship between multiplication and
division to understand and explain why the procedures for multiplying and
dividing fractions make sense.
One of the fifth grade standards in CCSS is 5.NF says “Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions”.

Royal Rugs” is the AIMS activity that provides a conceptual approach for students to understand adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. As a classroom teacher you will find it both easy to use and easy to supplement in to your math curriculum. Enjoy, and be in touch. 8-)
