From Happily Even After, Carole writes, “I fondly recall the first three-quarters of 1998 as a wonderful halcyon time for our family. I had just retired from a fifteen-year career in the legal profession to embark upon a career in the cosmetics industry, a career to which I felt ‘to the manner born.’ If anyone had any doubts as to my potential for success in this industry, a quick glance at either my face or in my cosmetics drawer (yes, that drawer, not ‘bag’) would put hos doubts immediately to rest, and happily, I realized the very success that I use to spend nights envisioning.
After a phenomenal twenty-eight-year career as as a police office and narcotics investigator, my husband Mike was look forward to his retirement with a mixture of wistfulness and anticipation. . . Exactly two weeks after his much-celebrated retirement, Mike was diagnosed with amyotropic lateral sclerosis (also referred to as ALS, or what is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). With that diagnosis came the beginning of a new journey; one that we always referred to as the journey of our lives.
Mike’s valiant battle with ALS came to a peaceful end on December 19, 2000, and with that ending came a new beginning; a scary and uncertain beginning called ‘widowhood.'”
This loss opened a new path for Carole, in which she is a model and guide for anyone facing widowhood, for anyone ready to discover their purpose after loss.
